He positively declined a re-nomination, and shortly afterthe close of the Fortieth Congress he returned to the plains to push for-ward the construction of the Pacific Railroad. He has just enjoyedthe proud satisfaction of witnessing the completion of that grandenterprise, to which the best energies of his life have been given, tothe success of which no living man has contributed more. 114.
