Penile wart. Small red wart on the tip of a 30 year old man's penis. Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), transmitted through sexual intercourse. There may be an interval of up to 18 months between infection and the appearance of the wart. The partner of a man with genital warts must have regular cervical smear tests to check for cancer as HPV seems to increase the risk of developing cancer of the cervix. Warts may be removed surgically or by the application of the drug podophyllin, although they commonly recur.
