In seeking for areason for its persistence, it is realizedthat the locomotive has a remarkablepower of adapting itself to the require-ments of the designer, and that it haspotentialities that constitute a wealth ofreserve force. Within recent years it has been calledupon to increase its power alike for pas-senger and goods service, and this demandhas been met partly by the introductioni higher boiler pressures, and partly byincrease of the dimensions of FROG AND SWITCH PLANER. self-contained. A heavy cast frameis fitted between the upper and lowerbearings and is also attached to the hous-ings, entirely precluding the possibilityof spring to the shafts or bearings under■ the heaviest cut. A fifty horse motor isattached to the upper casting and is out ofthe way of the operator. The construction throughout is of themost rigid kind, the driving shafts beingunusually large in diameter, and are madefrom special crucible steel, accuratelyground, and run in long bearings fittedsolidly into the bed. The machine is inevery way admirably adapted to withstandthe enormous strains incident to theheaviest kind of Frog and Switch work. The Locomotive in steam locomotive continues to bethe most fascinating of all the variedstudies presented by engineering, says the Loads, speeds, and lengths of run havebecome more exacting, and
