Monument of Nations, created by Krause, in 1806 is oldest monument in Tartu, Estonia


Tartu’s oldest monument, created by : Krause, was erected in 1806. Buried bones were found during construction of the main building of Tartu University at the site of the previous St. Mary’s church, under the floor and around the church. The bones were re-buried in the Toome valley near Vallikraavi Street, and a four-cornered Monument of Nations , copying a burial monument from Little Asia (Lydia), was erected according to drawings of Krause.
