Boeing C17 Globemaster transporter from under the nose backlit at Farnborough Airshow 2006 . The C 17 is about 174 feet or metres long with a 170ft or metres wingspan . The aircraft is powered by four Pratt Whitney F117 PW 100 engines which can be fully reversed . The Boeing 757 uses the commercial version of this engine Each rated at 40900 pounds of thrust . The thrust reversers direct the flow of air upward and forward to slow the aircraft quickly and avoid ingestion of dust and debris from the small rough ground airfields as short as 3000 feet and as narrow as 90 feet wide that it can land on . The aircraft is operated by a crew of three pilot copilot and loadmaster . Cargo is loaded onto the C 17 through a large rear door and can accommodate military vehicles and cargo pallets . The C 17 can carry virtually all of the Army air transportable combat equipment and can airdrop paratroopers and cargo . Maximum gross takeoff weight is 585000 pounds about 265790 Kgs and its maximum payload capacity is 170900 pounds about 77650 Kgs With a payload of 130000 pounds and an initial cruise altitude of 28000 feet the C 17 has a range of approximately 5200 nautical miles on one refuel. Its cruise speed is approximately 450 knots or Mach . The C 17 made its maiden flight on Sept 15 1991 and is operated by the Air Mobility Command .
