We are standing on the south bank of the Thames at Abingdon, just by Abingdpn's medieval bridge. Across the river, the view is dominated by Saint Helen's Wharf and the spire of St Helens Wharf on the right. To the left is Abingdon's old prison - now an apartment complex. It's midsummer, and every berthing space for pleasure and houseboats is full.
