Road destroyed by volcanic flooding, aerial photograph. The flood water is meltwater from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland. This meltwater formed following the eruption that took place under this glacier on 14 April 2010. This was a major eruption, sending ash high into the atmosphere. This cloud of ash was then blown south and east by the wind, leading to the airspace over the UK and other European countries being shut down due to the hazard the ash posed to aircraft engines. As well as damage to roads, large areas of fields were flooded following this eruption, and hundreds of people were evacuated. Photographed on 19 April 2010.
