The somewhat earlier arrival of a killing frost this year has helped to make October sales run heavier than those for the same month of a num- ber of years. Business, locally, in all lines, seems to be on the upgrade. The florists anticipate a good year. The frost created a lively demand for outdoor flowers. This activity and the large amount of funeral work has made October a banner month. There is a large supply of fine mums and just about enough carnations and roses are cut to go the rounds. Lilies are scarce. Some fine violets are com- ing in from both field and bench, but in another week all will be under glass. A recent cloudy spell brought mildew to some of the roses, but with the re- turn of sunshine the mildew is being cleared out. The Holland bulbs are on display in all the department stores, but the stores are not having it all their own way this year, for some of the florists are meeting the competition with low prices and lots of printers' ink. Various Notes. Henry Smith reports October busi- ness as being good and says he expects to attend the Cleveland show. The Eli Cross store force has been busy with several large funeral orders. Fine orchids are being shown by the Alfred Hannah Floral Co. James Schols is picking some extra fine violets. His violets are not all benched, but will be next week. A. F. C. NEW BEDFOBD, MASS. The Market. Business was livelier last week. There are plenty of chrysanthemums and a good demand for them. Carna- tions are better than they have been and are selling well. Several large weddings during the week stimulated trade to a great extent. Various Notes. At a meeting of the executive and entertainment committees of the New Bedford Horticultural Society, held re- cently at the home of Frank H. Tripp, it was decided to hold the annual chrys- anthemum show November 9 and 10. An additional silver cup
