Allergic conjunctivitis. Bloodshot eye of a 14- year-old girl with allergic conjunctivitis brought on by hayfever. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the eye. It causes redness, irritation, itching and, occasionally, abnormal sensitivity to light. Allergic conjunctivitis is accompanied by a clear discharge. Treatment is with antihistamine drugs in eye drops. Hayfever is an allergy to airborne particles such as pollen or dust.
