Australopithecus africanus skull (STS-71). This part of the skull of this specimen was discovered in 1947, in Sterkfontein, South Africa. In 1972, a lower jaw (STS-36, not shown) that was from the same location, was assigned to this specimen (see image C015/6798). Both fossils are thought to be around million years old. A. africanus is one of several extinct species forming an early part of the human evolutionary tree.
