He delivered a Commencementaddress before the Yale Law School in 1882, and wassubsequently made Doctor of Laws by his Alinn was called to the bar of New York in 1851, and soonafter became associated in a law partnership with JudgeWilliam Kent, whom he assisted in editing that well knownlegal work Kents Commentaries.
