Nasal rash. Nose of a 56 year old man showing scabs and inflammation caused by discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). In this disorder, the immune system attacks connective tissue as if it were foreign tissue. DLE causes periodically- recurring inflammation in a defined area. It is not known what triggers autoimmune diseases such as DLE, and there is no cure. The symptoms can be treated with anti- inflammatory drugs.
