We meet to-day to remember and honor an an-cestry whose seed has been blessed and whose worthand v\ork the world may well note. It was in theearly morning of the countrys history that ourprogenitors sought a refuge in the wilds of the newworld. The province of Pennsylvania was still underBritish rule. A primeval forest still covered mostof this vast territory and over these broad acres thewild Indian still chased the fleet deer and the savagebeast roamed at will. In the solitude and silence ofthis far-away forest retreat, these godly men found. MUMMA a place where they could serve their God as theirconscience taught. They were primitive and typicalMennonites. Their religious belief was an out-growth of the Reformation—of that great religiousawakening that in the early part of the i6th centuryso stirred Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Franceand other parts of Europe? The Mennonites fromthe beginning became a distinct and peculiar faith made them so. Their faith made them aparticular object of persecution. Their belief wasfirm and their discipline was severe. They acceptedthe Word of God as they found it and they acceptedit with great literalness. God and his Word wastheir only guide. They were a plain and humblepeople. They abhorred all worldly vanities.
