TISCHBEIN, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm,painter and engraver, was born at Hayna in studying for a time with his uncle, JohannHeinrich Tischbein, he went, in 1776, to Hamburg,to Johann Jakob Tischbein, who employed him inrestoring old pictures, and in copying the works ofBerchem and Wouwerman. In 1770 he went tothe Hague and to Rotterdam, where he improvedhimself by study of the old masters. In 1773 hereturned to Cassel and began to paint portraits,working at the same time on copies from Rem-brandt and Van Dyck, and making studies ofanimals. In 1777 he visited Dresden and Berlin ;in the latter city he painted many portraits, in- o< tinO <. PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. eluding one of the Queen of Prussia ; in 1779 hewent as a pensioner of the Court of Hesse to Rome,where he studied Raphael and the antique. In1781 he was in Switzerland making drawings forLavater. In 1782 the Duke of Gotha providedhim with funds for a visit to Rome, and he therepainted the Conradin, now in Schloss Frieden-etein, for his patron, and made the sketches for his* Brutus, Sophonisba, and Helena. In 1787 heaccompanied Goethe to Naples, where he was madedirector of the Academy two years later. AtNaples he became acquainted with Sir WilliamHamilton ; he painted a portrait of the Ambassa-dors beautiful wife, and carried out the admirableengravings in outline from the Greek vases be-longing to Sir William. This work was pub-lished at Naples in 1791, in three volumes folio,under the title of The Hamilton Vases. On theoccupation of Naples by the French he returnedto Cassel, and settled later at Hamburg.
