For sixteen years hewas a member of the Board of Education, a por-tion of the time serving as President. Duringthat period several ward schoolhouses were built,the academy remodeled, and the free libraryfounded. He introduced and secured the passageof the resolution that founded the library, nowone of the best in the state. At Middletown, December 31, 1872, Mr. Deckermarried Miss Frances Emily Horton, daughter ofCharles Horton, a retired tanner, formerly ofCallicoon, N. Y. Mrs. Decker was born in thatvillage, and w-as the recipient of excellent educa-tional advantages, being a graduate of YassarCollege. They are the parents of four children,. HERBERT GEDNEV. The family occupy an elegantresidence on Highland Avenue, which was de-signed and built by Mr. Decker. He is a mem-l)erofthe Second Presbyterian Church. For atime he was President of Excelsior Hook andLadder Company No. i, and is now an honorarymember of the organization. Socially he is iden-tified with the Paughcaughmaughsinque Lodgeof Red Men in this city. He is also a memberof Clinton Lodge No. 169, F. & A. ^L, at Clin-ton; Midland Chapter No. 240. R. A. .M.; Dela-ware Commander} No. 44, at Port Jervis, and ofthe Psi Chapter of the Psi Ups
