It is chiefly a stimulant; it is used in addition to other fertilizers. It is very quick in action and hastens the maturity of crops fully two weeks. Being extremely soluble it should not be applied until the plants are above ground, when 100 to 500 pounds per acre, mixed with wood ashes or land plaster, for convenience in applying, are generally used.
