The 1906 caption reads: “LUDWIG'S EMBASSY INTERRUPTS THE WEDDING OF CHARLES THE BALD.—Charles the Bald was the first king who ruled over France as a separate kingdom from Germany. He and his two brothers, Ludwig and Lothair, had divided the Frankish Empire between them. But Ludwig was dissatisfied, and while Charles was in the midst of his wedding with Ermentrude, daughter of one of his chief nobles, the festivities were broken in upon by a sudden demand from Ludwig for a further share of his brother's land.” The year was 842 AD
