This quaint old engraving of St. Helena is from theNavigations of Jan Huygen van Linschoten, publishedat Amsterdam in 1610. Linschoten, a man of Harlem bybirth, sailed to the East in the train of Bishop Fonsecaof Portugal. He tells us that the only regular inhabitantof the island was a hermit; but sick men were often leftthere, with some rice and biscuit, to recover from scurvy, and then picked up by other ships, this being a regularplace of call. He tells us that inscriptions on the islandwent back as far as 1510. There are some wonderfulpictures of flying fish in the vicinity of the island.
