St Sepulchre, church in the City of London; sword rest

St Sepulchre, church in the City of London. Rebuilt soon after the Great Fire of London (1666) probably by Joshua Marshall. Coloured wrought-iron sword rest is early eighteenth century. Sword rests were made by a parish when one of its parishioners was elected Lord Mayor. During his year of office, the Lord Mayor visited a different church every Sunday, leaving his ceremonial sword on the sword rest during these state visits.
