Admission: Infants to twenty-one years; in-patients must be resi-dents of Maine; cases with lung tuberculosis sometimes taken andisolated; feeble-minded are taken, all that is possible is done for theirorthopedic difficulties, then they are sent to State Home for Feeble-minded. In emergencies only, a few infants who were not ortho-pedic cases have been taken. Discharge: After dispensary care can be safely substituted; averagestay 97 days. 142 DESCRIPTION OF INSTITUTIONS. 143 CARE OF CRIPPLED CHILDREN Facilities for care of children: Medical staff includes orthopedicspecialists; superintendent and superintendent of nurses aregraduate nurses; 22 nurses in training, whose course includes twoand one-half years in this hospital and six months at BellevueHospital in New York. Night nurse and engineer on duty allnight. Full hospital equipment. All kinds of orthopedic opera-tions performed. Well equipped gymnasium for special gym-nastics. Isolation ward over kitchen, accessible only by outsideiron stairs, includes two wards, nurses room, bath, diet kitchen,serving room, store room. Brace shop in basement where work forthe hospital is done; also private orders; brace makers work inde-pendently, not on salary. Large dispensary service daily.
