Close-up of the ear of a 75 year old man during an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. Blisters and scabs have appeared which are extremely painful and due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster). Dormant viruses survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by illness or old age.
