The harbour of Kingston is considered one of the best in the West Indies; but the sea-l)reeze, which often blows with great vio- lence, sends in a considerable sea, making it frequently very dangerous for boats. The port might be imj)roved by cutting through the pali- sadoes at the narrowest part, making the en- trance to the eastward : by placing a lighthouse at this entrance, ships might enter the harbour at all times of night, and save a long detour. Port Eoyal has been the bugbear of naval officers from time immemorial, and the bad name which it bears has been to a certain ex- tent ascribed to Jamaica generally. But most unjustly so. As well might a person judge of England from a residence at Sheerness! In this respect I fear my own cloth are not guiltless, for I have known naval men abuse Jamaica who seldom left Port Royal, and never went further than Kingston. The place is bad enough, but, like many another place, is not half so bad as it is painted. The Commodore's.
