Swollen lip. Close-up of the swollen lip of a 42-year-old male patient caused by angioedema (angioneurotic oedema). Angioedema is an allergic reaction characterised by the swelling of soft tissue in the lips, mouth, larynx and other areas. The cause here is unknown. Angioedema can cause difficulty with breathing and potentially block the wind pipe. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs and antihistamines.
