The part of the squamosal that isoverhung continues ventrally to articulate with a depression on the lateral surface of thequadratojugal. This squamosal pleat is perhaps restricted among the earliest archosaurs tothe erythrosuchids Erythrosuchus and Shansisuchus (personal observation of IVPPmaterial). The ventral process of the squamosal of E. africanus extends down towards theposterior process of the jugal, and almost (BMNH R3592, BPI 4680) excludes thequadratojugal from the border of the late
