Grwy sky portrait, to Salford Branch and Great Northern Viaducts, barges moored Castlefield Canal Basin arm, Manchester, UK
The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. Here we see a brick arch of the 1848-49 Salford Branch Viaduct, the most northerly viaduct and still sued by main line trains. Behind it rises the grey tubular steel 1894 Great Northern Viaduct, now disused. The Castlefield Arena, a site for occasional gigs and festivals, stands left mid-distance, part of the Castlefield Heritage Park's turning of an old industrial canal basin into a modern tourist attraction. Many of the canal boats moored in the basin are houseboats.
