He wasgraduated from Yale in 1854, and entered upon ascientific course at the school of mines in Paris,from which he was graduated in 1860. Upon hisreturn home he appointed in 1851 to make themineraliigical and metallurgical collections of theSmithsoman Institute in Washington, and retainedcharge of the work until 1864. In 1863 he presentedto the trustees of Columbia college plans for the or-ganization of a school of mines, and was appointedto the cliair of mineralogy and metallurgy, upon theopening of the institution in 1864. In 1866 he madethe geological and agricultural survey of the first 100miles of the Union Pacific railway, and in 1868 wasappointed conmiissioner to examine and report uponthe condition of the fortifications in the UnitedSlates, and in 1870, 1878 and1885 he inspected and report
