CANADA LUMBERMAN 49 Worst Fire Season Encountered in Many Years The annual meeting's of the St. Maurice Forest Protective As- sociation and the Southern St. Lawrence Forest Protective As- sociation were held at the Wind- sor Hotel, Montreal, on January 25th. At the meeting- of the first named, Mr. F. I. Ritchie was elected President, and Mr. J. P. MacLaurin, Vice-President, with the following directors:— Messrs. F. Faure, F. I. Ritchie, Ellwood Wilson, J. M. Dalton, J. P. Mac- Laurin, Robert F. Grant and S. L. de Carteret. The report of Mr. F. Faure, the retiring- president, referred to the past season as the worst on re- cord, as far as fires were concern- ed. In view of the large number of fires set by sportsmen, non- Frank I. Ritchie, Three Rivers, members of organized clubs, Mr. Faure suggested that representa- tions be made to the Provincial Government to have the fire laws a- mended, making it compulsory for every person entering the woods during the season of the year when there is a fire hazard, to carry per- mits issued by patrolmen. The cost of fire fighting during the past season was great. However, the cost of all operations of the Associa- tion including the fire fighting, did not exceed one cent per acre of the area patrolled. In his report, M. H. Sorgius, the manager, added that the fire cost was more than the last ten years added together. Several fires burned for a period of over two months. The number of fires along the railroad was greatly reduced owing to the railway officials taking a more serious view of fire protection. There was no doubt that sever- al fires were purposely set so as to give employment, but unfort- unately, the Association could not discover the offenders.
