Gilbert Romme (1750-1795). 1868 illustration of the French politician and mathematician Charles-Gilbert Romme. Romme is best known for the development of the French Republican Calendar (French Revolutionary Calendar). During the French Revolution Romme voted in favour of the death sentence for Louis XVI, but was later arrested during the events leading to the Reign of Terror (1793-1794), and imprisoned by Girondist supporters in Caen for two months. Later, in 1795, he was sentenced to the guillotine but killed himself before his sentence could be carried out.
