A 19th Century view of the room where William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. His date of birth is unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23 April, Saint George's Day. Shakespeare (1564-1616) became an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, the "Bard of Avon", or simply "the Bard".
