Inside the boiler room within the closed St Clements Hospital in London's East End before the major redevelopment.
St Clements Hospital in Mile End and part of London's East End closed its doors in 2005. Used as a mental health unit, the site is now under major redevelopment to create 252 dwellings and affordable homes based on the open market rates which are linked to the average means tested salaries within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Supported by the then Mayor of London Boris Johnson and in partnership with the Community Land Trust, Peabody Housing Trust and Linden Homes, work officially started in March 2014. Once a Victorian Workhouse, St Clements had cells within the ground levels of the older part of the building. These had sturdy doors with bars at the windows not unlike a jail and what looks like a stone base for a table within one. Imagination ran riot at what it could have been and could have even played a role a mortuary. A restraining chair was also found inside a cell, this looked to have been part of an art installation or a film prop and doubtful that it was hospital equipment (at least we hope). This area has now been demolished as part of the regeneration of the site. Bombed in WWII, St Clements Hospital has much history and could be identified from the outside where it was patched up. It played a part to the first “Shuffle” festival (please see my other St Clements images on Alamy for this).
