General Van Rensselaer now returned to the Ameri-can shore to bring over the rest of the army ; but the militiadenying the constitutional right of their commander to takethem out of the State, refused to embark. Meantime theircomrades on the Canadian shore, thus basely abandoned,after a desperate struggle, were compelled to surrender.
