CHINESE IMMIGRATION. The material interests of this country, the tradi-tions of its settlement and the sentiment of our peoplehave led the Government to offer the widest hospi-tality to immigrants who seek our shores for new andhappier homes, willing to share the burdens as well asthe benefits of our society, and intending that theirposterity shall become an undistinguishable part ofour population. The recent movement of the Chineseto our Pacific coast partakes but little of the qualities ofsuch an immigration either in its purposes or its is too much like an importation to be welcomedwithout restriction; too much like an invasion to belooked upon without solicitude. We cannot consent.
