After years of experi- menting they settled upon a variety which originated among them (as did the Danvers onion), known in their locality as the "Dan- vers ; It is in form about midway be- tween the Long Orange and Short Horn class, growing on light soils generally with a stump root. Under high cultivation (see our treatise on Carrots and Mangolds) forty tons are raised to the acre, and, at times even larg- er crops. This carrot is of a rich, dark orange in color, very smooth and handsome, and from its length is easier to dig than the Long Orange. It is a first-class carrot for any soil. Pasco, Ripon, Wis., writes: "I have grown Dan- vers carrots from your seed at the rate of sixteen hundred bushels to the ; g CHANTENAY. Of a rich, dark orange color. In earliness it ranks intermediate between the Danvers and the Short Horn. Of the style of the Dan- vers. hardly as large, but finer and more sym- metrical. Our customers will find the Chan- tenay a decided acquisition for those markets which call for those carrots of a finer type than the Danvers.
