Nylon hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus viridiflorus) surrounded by young cacti in southeastern Colorado.

Nylon hedgehog cactus, or green-flowered hedgehog cactus (Echincereus viridiflorus), is a very frost-tolerant hedgehog cactus species, growing farther north than others. The spines can be variable in color - from white or yellow, to pinkish, to red. Stems may remain single, or they may form into clumps. Small yellow-greenish flowers emerge from the stem, rather than the top. They can be found throughout northern Mexico, the American southwest, and as far north as South Dakota.
