Erythromycin antibiotic drug. Close-up of a blisterpack of 250 mg tablets of the antibiotic drug erythromycin. This drug is a macrolide antibiotic that has a similar effectiveness to that of penicillin, but can be used by those who are allergic to penicillin. Its uses include the treatment of infections of the respiratory tract. This drug is produced by a soil bacterium, and was discovered in 1949. It was patented in the 1950s by the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company, and its synthesis was achieved in 1981. This is a generic form of the drug, produced by the British pharmaceutical company Milpharm.
