Peeling copy (since renewed) of portrait by Antonio Poggi () of General George Augustus Eliott, 1st Baron Heathfield (1717-90), which hung in All Saints Street, Old Town, Hastings, East Sussex, England, UK. General Eliott, ‘Defender of Gibraltar’, led the British garrison in the 1779-83 Great Siege of Gibraltar by Spain and France. The painting hung outside ‘Shovells’, once the Tudor home of Anne Shovell, mother of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707), who had helped capture Gibraltar in 1704. Sir Cloudesley was portrayed on the reverse side of the hanging sign.

General Eliott, ‘Defender of Gibraltar’, commanded the British garrison in the four-year (1779-83) Franco-Spanish Great Siege of Gibraltar. ‘Shovells’ is believed to have been the home of Anne Shovell, mother of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707), who had helped to capture the Rock of Gibraltar about 75 years earlier, in 1704. Sir Cloudesley was portrayed on the other side of the sign.
