Air pollution. Chimneys of a nickel-smelting factory release fumes into the air. The sulphurous fumes settle around the smelting plant as a fine dust which poisons wildlife. Sulphur oxides, once dissolved in atmsopheric water, are also a major cause of acid rain. The main nickel ores, pentlandite and pyrrhotite, contain nickel sulfide. They are smelted in blast furnaces before the nickel is removed by various processes. Photographed in Norilsk, Siberia, northern Russia.
