RATE AREA, HOW TO LAY OUT A SCOTCH BOILER With boilers as with other things, the tendency of the timeshas been, and is a survival of the fittest. Of the innumer-able classes and types of boilers for the generation of steamfor use in marine installations, none has attained the degreeof all-around efficiency and excellency as now represented bya modern and well-designed boiler of the Scotch type. Thisstatement applies to a greater or less extent to boilers for sta-tionary uses, although, for reasons of expense principally, the suggestions on the subject of laying out a Scotch boiler ofan average size, such as might be used for a modern marineplant. To illustrate, suppose we were asked to design a Scotchboiler from the following data, diameter 12 reet 0 inches in-side ; grate surface, 54 square feet; steam pressure, 175 poundsper square inch. The boiler to furnish steam to a triple ex-pansion engine developing 600 I. H- course it is necessary to make a drawing the first thing,. A TYPICAL THREE-FURNACE SCOTCH BOILER. This boiler is 13 feet 6 inches diameter by 12 feet long. It is fitted with three Morrison corrugated furnaces connected to one combustionchamber, the total heating surface being 2,925 square feet and the total grate surface. «ilh 6-foot bars. 57 square feet. Naturally then the designing of theScotch boiler for use afloat has been given more attentionand has reached more nearly that degree of perfection desir-able than has been attained in the designing of this type ofboiler for use on shore. shown properly, so that a list of all material can be taken oftand the material ordered. . the plates will
