This forms a most rigid and secure means of support. At this point, moreover, a special construction is made use of to protect thecables where they leave the conduits to connect with the motorleads. As at this point they are inevitably subjected to a largeamount of flexure, the protruding cables are arranged to befirmly carried in insulating clamps before and after connectingwith the truck cables; these, which end in similar two-piececonnectors to those shown upon the cables from the contactors, are swung up through the empty insulating (electrobestos)clamps in the foreground above in connecting up. They arebent to the shape of a letter S in dropping to the truck so as toprovide most easily the flexure DETAILS OF THE SWITCHBOARD, SHOWING ALSO THEARRANGEMENT OF APPARATUS The truck connections are shown in a separate view. Theeight leads which join those shown in the preceding view areeach covered with a closely-wound helix or brass wire, which March 4, 1905.] STREET RAILWAY TOURNAL. 427 serves very effectively in protecting the insulation from theundesirable abrasion. After the leads from the truck havebeen connected with corresponding leads on the car, the con-nectors are insulated by means of rubber tubing, which, afterbeing slipped on, are in turn carefully covered with severallayers of adhesive tape. The only use of conduit upon thetruck is for the cable connecting the two third-rail collectingshoes. The leads from No. 2 motor are carried across the truckbolster in a fibre trough suspended from the truck leaving this trough the leads are carried on top of No. 1motor, where they, together with the leads from this motor, are held firmly
