Infact, to the average concert-goer the Viola is only a Viola when it ison its bottom-string. Sombre, austere, sometimes even forbidding,2its mere sound, even in the simplest phrases, is sufficient to conjure upthe image of Tragedy. Indeed, the simpler and more persistent thephrase the greater its effect when played on the Viola. Gevaertmentions the impressive effect produced in Act III. of Robert le Diableby these few Viola notes: EXAMPLE di Valse Infernale. Meyerbeer. Robert le Diable. Bassoons Violas. Cellos.
