Japanese Japan Honen In Kyoto buddhist temple
Honen (also Hōnen Bo Genku) 1133-1212 is the founder of the first independent branch of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism known as Jodo Shu. Jodo is Japanese for 'The Pure Land' and shu is Japanese for 'sect'. In the related Jodo Shinshu sect, he is considered the Seventh Patriarch.
