Osteoporosis: illustration of a weakened femoral head (hip joint) at the point of breaking, and the stooped posture of the elderly woman at left. Osteoporosis describes a reduction in bone density, resulting in an increase in brittleness and a greater risk of fractures, particularly of the vertebrae, hip or arm. The condition arises in middle/late life through an imbalance between formation & resorption of bone. The incidence is greater in women than in men and is attributed to a decline in ovarian hormone production following the menopause. Treatment with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is effective but highly controversial.
