Pressed by this danger, thefranchise was promised to all the Italians who should laydown theii arms by a certain day. This measure pro-duced the desired effect, and terminated the Social War, 88, in which Italy had lost 300,000 men. Allaccepted the offer except the Samnites, who afterwardsjoined Marius in his war against Sulla. The new citizensthus admitted to the franchise, were, however, not put ona complete footing of equality -svith the old ones, and, aswe shall see hereafter, thia ai^rangement gave lise to ireshcivil COIN OF SULLA.
