Mongolia: The coronation of Ogedei Khan in 1229. Illustration by Rashid al-Din Hamadani (1237-1318), early 14th century. Ogedei Khan (c. 1186-1241) was the second Khagan of the Mongol Empire, succeeding his father Genghis Khan in 1229. He was Genghis' third son, and continued the expansion of his father's empire, becoming a world figure when the Mongol Empire reached its farthest extent west and south after the Mongol invasion of East Asia and Europe.
