How-ard crossed the Park inhis famous pursuit ofthe Nez Perce Indiansin 1877; the year thatP. W. Norris was madesuperintendent to suc-ceed N. P. Langfordwho had held that of-fice five years. did more forthe Park than can bereckoned; he served assuperintendent withoutpay or remuneration ofany kind and had up-held the NationalPark Idea from the. The United States Geological Survey resumed workin the Park in 1878 under Dr. F. V. Hayden; and in1883 a report was published giving detailed descriptionsof the points of interest, as well as scientific discussions ofthe phenomena observed. This report is beautifully il-lustrated with color-plates, engravings, diagrams andmaps.
