The Church Sign of St Etheldreda’s Church, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, tells us that a church has stood here since the 7th century. King Edgar presented the property to the monks of Ely c970 and they dedicated their monastery to the Saxon Queen and Saint Etheldreda, In 1108 Hatfield became one of the residences of the Bishop of Ely from which it derives its full title of Bishop’s Hatfield. The present church dedicated to St Etheldreda dates from c1240.
