In 1900, there was a con-certed attempt on the part of abody called Boxers, aided by apart of the Chinese Govern-ment, to drive all foreignersfrom China. The unitedforces marched to Peking, rescued the besieged legations, andcompelled China to yield to their demands. Articles of agree-ment were signed and peace was declared in 1901. Expansion had brought under its controlmany islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The beginning of the twentieth century found the UnitedStates occupying a new condition in regard to the world atlarge.
