Placentae separatingelastically from the walls of the capsule. Seeds compressed, nearly orbicular. About 60 species, natives of warm and tropical regions. Leaves ovate, membranous, long-petioled,acuminate or acute at the apex, narrowed orrounded at the base, 3-6 long, 1-3 wide;inflorescence paniculate, the involucres 1-4-flowered, each of 2 oblong or obovate, obtuseor mucronate, opposite bracts; corolla 8-i2long, pink or purple, the lips about as long asthe slender tube; upper lip 2-3-toothed. thelower entire; capsule oblong, 2,-2, high, alittle longer than the involucre, the valvesslightly divergent in dehiscence, the placentaeremaining attached to their summits.
