Adhesive mortar, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The microcrystals (blue) in this specialist mortar increase the contact surface between the mortar and the tile and provide a stronger bond. The material is also less dense and heavy than normal mortar as it contains expanded glass (also called foam glass, red). Magnification: x4600 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
