Civil Divisions. This state is divided into fivecounties, viz. Rockingham, Stafford, Hillsborough, Che*shire and Grafton. Rivers and Lakes. Connecticut, Androscoggin, Saco,Piscataqua, and Merrimack rivers, receive a great partof their waters, and the two last have a great part oftheir courses, in this state. Connecticut river is settled nearly to its source, extend-ing along the western side of this state, about 170 miles.
